At rcs construction, we’re all about offering top-notch services to our clients, and our in-house interior design, led by the talented Dorothy Swindall, is a prime example. Dorothy’s approach to interior design is flexible and client-focused, ensuring each project is uniquely tailored to meet specific needs and preferences.
Dorothy starts her day by checking her emails, addressing any new project updates and client communications right away. She likes to keep her inbox clean so she can prioritize tasks efficiently and stay on top of everything.
When starting a new project, Dorothy meets with clients to discuss their goals, budgets, and design preferences. She then conducts site visits to measure spaces, assess lighting and electrical needs, and spot any potential design challenges. Using software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, she creates 2D and 3D design concepts. She also coordinates with suppliers and vendors to source materials and products, both online and in person.
Once the initial designs are approved by the client, Dorothy creates detailed design drawings, including floor plans and elevations. She works closely with mechanical and electrical consultants to make sure everything aligns perfectly and then issues the final construction sets.
Dorothy’s role doesn’t end with designing; she attends project meetings to discuss progress, timelines, and any design-related issues. Regular site visits are also part of her routine to monitor progress and ensure everything is on track.
Staying updated with industry trends, best practices, and new design software is important to Dorothy. She continuously educates herself through Continuing Education Units (CEUs) provided by suppliers.
Dorothy’s tasks can vary greatly from day to day. One day she might be laying out a floor plan, while the next she could be in meetings or sourcing materials. This variety keeps her job exciting and allows her to bring fresh, innovative ideas to each project.
Dorothy has also contributed to the growth of future professionals in the field by mentoring students from various schools. To date, she has had three students work with her from two different schools. Two of the students were from Lockview High School, completing their work terms as part of the O2 Coop Program. The other student was from Halifax West High School, working to complete her Coop work term.
As far as teams Dorothy has worked with throughout the DD family, she has provided site plan layouts and hotel floor plans for Tier Two and assisted Mill-Right with estimates and shop drawings when they are backlogged. She has collaborated on multiple jobs with Pm Co, having worked on 26 projects with them to date. Overall, Dorothy has worked on 46 jobs with rcs, designing 13 of them herself. These projects include:
- Brightwood Bar and Reception Area
- NSHEPP

Whether it is providing plans for the client to visualize their space, working with a designer or architect in another province and being the local designer on their behalf to oversee a job here, or providing a building code review on a floor plan, Dorothy’s versatility and dedication are evident.
At rcs construction, we’re proud to have Dorothy Swindall as our in-house interior designer. Her creativity, expertise, and client-focused approach ensure that every project is personalized and meticulously crafted to perfection.
